Joan Keyes

Joan Keyes opened Dovetail Publishing Services in 1996 in Boulder Creek, California. In 2002, the company relocated to Grass Valley, California, in the Sierra foothills. She began work in publishing in 1986 as a typesetter at Jonathan Peck Typographers in Santa Cruz, California, and in 1990 was promoted to production coordinator. When JPT began offering project management services to its clients, Joan headed the department.

Prior to publishing, Joan worked as a grant writer for the McCarter Theatre Company and an editor and proofreader for a public relations agency in Princeton, New Jersey. She has a degree in theater arts and management from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and, after graduating, worked for ten years as a professional stage manager and lighting designer.

Joan has taken classes in oral history from Baylor University and is studying genealogy through the National Genealogical Society.

Joan is a co-producer of the Nevada County Women’s Writing Salon and a judge for the annual Nevada County Reads writing contest. She enjoys reading, gardening, radio podcasts, genealogy, personal history, and supporting the art of the written word in all its forms.

Jonathan Peck

Jon’s earliest interest in the printed word began in 1967 in high school print shop when type was physical, tactile, and, of course backwards. The tools used to set type have been ever-changing, but the satisfaction of assembling well-composed words has never diminished.

He has worked in publishing since 1970. After working as project coordinator and production supervisor at Applied Typographic Systems, he founded his own composition firm, Jonathan Peck Typographers, in 1977. His broad experience includes hands-on production, management of production teams, and management of publishing technology. He enjoys a deep appreciation of the evolution of technology and the personal benefits to keeping up with it.

Jon joined Dovetail Publishing Services in 1997 with long-time friend and colleague, Joan Keyes. Jon’s interaction with the publishing community includes twelve years as a member of Bookbuilders West (now Publishing Professionals Network) board of directors, including a year as Bookbuilders’ president. He is the 1994 recipient of Bookbuilders’ Distinguished Service Award. He chaired numerous committees including education and the Book Show.

Jon enjoys sailing, inventing simple ways to do difficult things, building, geography, history, the arts and music, tools of all kinds, and his MGB.
